Question
Humpty Dumpty sits on a wall every day while having lunch. The wall sometimes breaks. A person sitting on the wall falls if the wall breaks.Which one of the statements below is logically valid and can be inferred from the above sentences?
Correct answer
(B) Humpty Dumpty does not fall sometimes while having lunch
Solution
1.Humpty Dumpty sits on the wall during lunch every day.
2.The wall breaks only sometimes.
3.If the wall breaks, the person sitting on it falls.
From (2), there are days when the wall breaks and days when it does not. On days when the wall does not break, Humpty Dumpty does not fall (assuming the wall breaking is the only cause of falling mentioned). Therefore, it is logically valid to infer that he does not fall sometimes while having lunch. - (A) is incorrect because the wall only breaks 'sometimes', not always.
- (C) is incorrect because the text provides no information about dinner.
- (D) is a logical fallacy (denying the antecedent); the wall could break for other reasons even if Humpty Dumpty is not sitting on it.
