(A) Self energizing for clockwise rotation of the drum

A brake is said to be self-energizing if the friction force assists in applying the brake by increasing the normal force for a given applied force.Let's analyze the moments about the pivot at the left end of the lever:
1.The applied force at the right end creates a clockwise moment about the pivot.
2.The normal reaction from the drum on the shoe creates an anti-clockwise moment about the pivot.
3.The friction force acts on the shoe. For clockwise rotation of the drum, the friction force on the shoe acts towards the right. Since the contact point is below the pivot, this friction force creates a clockwise moment about the pivot.
Because the moment due to friction is in the same direction as the moment due to the applied force , it helps in pressing the shoe against the drum, thereby increasing the braking effect. Thus, the brake is self-energizing for clockwise rotation.Continue learning with Success Tracker
