Hunting in a synchronous machine is the oscillation of the rotor about its equilibrium position due to sudden changes in load. To damp these oscillations, damper windings (short-circuited copper bars) are placed in the pole faces of the rotor. When hunting occurs, the relative motion between the rotor and the rotating magnetic field induces currents in these damper windings. These currents produce a damping torque that opposes the oscillations. The energy of the oscillations is dissipated as heat in the damper windings, which are part of the rotor circuit. Thus, hunting is predominantly damped by copper losses in the rotor.
