GATE CE Previous Year Questions & Study Resources

GATE Civil Engineering (CE)

1,690 solved GATE CE questions from 2014–2026, each with the official answer and a step-by-step solution. Solving past papers is the highest-signal preparation there is: it teaches the real difficulty level, the recurring topics, and the time pressure of the actual exam.

GATE CE subject-wise PYQs

Choose a subject to revise one area at a time. Subject tags can overlap; these question counts are not marks weightage.

Build on your GATE CE PYQ revision

Reading a solution is a useful start. In Success Tracker, you can attempt questions yourself, review mistakes and return to the topics that need another pass.

AI-powered practice· Unlimited practice on eligible plans
PYQs with solutions
Attempt available previous-year questions, then compare your reasoning with the worked solution. Coverage varies by stream.
Practice that adapts
Choose a topic, work on weaker areas and bookmark questions to revisit. Your attempts feed your progress tracking.
AI doubt support
Ask follow-up questions about a step or concept while practising, instead of stopping at the final answer.

Unlimited practice is available on eligible plans. Free practice and AI usage have limits; check the current plan allowances before choosing.

Learn the concept, then solve the PYQs

Start with the available GATE CE revision companions: Structural Engineering, General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geomatics Engineering. Each combines concept notes, mistakes to avoid, an original worked example, a self-check and free further reading with the subject’s PYQs. No account is needed to read them.

Structural Engineering: connect loads, equilibrium, and internal response

Begin with an idealized structure and an explicit load diagram. These selected foundations connect statics, stress, beam response, and compatibility through small calculations. The original exercises are learning models, not member sizing guidance or assessments of whether a real structure is safe.

General Aptitude: read the claim, then test it

Separate what is stated from what is inferred. Verbal reasoning depends on the passage's own claims; quantitative reasoning depends on a stated relationship. These selected foundations connect reading comprehension, data interpretation, and basic arithmetic reasoning. They are not a substitute for broader practice.

Engineering Mathematics: verify hypotheses before applying a formula

State the domain, continuity, or convergence condition a formula requires before substituting values. These selected foundations connect linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, complex analysis, probability, and numerical methods as they appear in the GATE CE syllabus. Each topic needs its own deeper study.

Geotechnical Engineering: separate soil weight, water pressure, and effective stress

Treat soil as a system of solids, water, and air rather than a single uniform material. These selected notes connect phase quantities, flow, and stress through explicit assumptions. The original calculations support conceptual revision only; they do not prescribe foundations, earthworks, or field investigation decisions.

Water Resources Engineering: track flow, channel geometry, and water volume

Keep flow rates, stored volumes, and depths distinct before choosing an equation. These selected foundations connect fluid statics, continuity, open-channel regimes, and rainfall accounting. The original exercises use idealized supplied data for learning; they are not instructions for sizing channels, drainage works, or hydraulic structures.

Environmental Engineering: track pollutant loads and removal before sizing

Identify the pollutant, its concentration, the flow, and the treatment objective before selecting a process. These selected foundations connect water quality parameters, treatment unit operations, air pollution, and solid waste management. The original exercises use idealized supplied data for learning; they are not instructions for designing treatment systems.

Transportation Engineering: define the design vehicle, speed, and flow before computing

State the design speed, vehicle type, and traffic parameters before selecting a formula. These selected foundations connect highway geometric design, traffic flow theory, and pavement design. The original exercises use idealized supplied data for learning; they are not instructions for designing roads or intersections.

Geomatics Engineering: close the survey loop before interpreting coordinates

Record raw measurements, apply corrections, and verify closure before using survey data. These selected foundations connect leveling, traversing, coordinate computation, and remote sensing. The original exercises use idealized supplied data for learning; they do not prescribe field procedures or equipment calibration.

A repeatable PYQ revision routine

  1. Attempt a question before reading its solution. Write down your assumptions and reasoning, not just the answer.
  2. Compare the reasoning. Classify a miss as a concept gap, a calculation error or a misread condition.
  3. Use the revision notes to repair the gap, then attempt a different question from the same subject.
  4. Reattempt the missed question later without the solution. Use a complete paper to check pacing after topic revision.
