Question

A 6 m×6 m6\text{ m} \times 6\text{ m} square footing constructed in clay is subjected to a vertical load of 2500 kN2500\text{ kN} at its centre. The base of the footing is 2 m2\text{ m} below the ground surface, as shown in the figure. The footing is made of 2 m2\text{ m} thick concrete. The ground water table is at a great depth. Considering Terzaghi’s bearing capacity theory, the factor of safety of footing against the bearing capacity failure is ____________ (rounded off to 2 decimal places).
Diagram showing a 6m wide footing at a depth of 2m below the ground surface, with a 2500 kN vertical load applied at the center.
Note:
Unit weight of concrete =24 kN/m3= 24\text{ kN/m}^3
Properties of clay: c=50 kN/m2c = 50\text{ kN/m}^2, ϕ=0\phi = 0^\circ, and γ=19 kN/m3\gamma = 19\text{ kN/m}^3
For ϕ=0\phi = 0^\circ: Nc=5.7N_c = 5.7, Nq=1N_q = 1, Nγ=0N_\gamma = 0
