Question
Which one or more of the following need to be saved on a context switch from one thread () of a process to another thread () of the same process?
Correct answer
(B) Stack pointer; (C) Program counter; (D) General purpose registers
Solution
In a multi-threaded process, all threads share the same virtual address space, which means they share the same page table. Therefore, the Page table base register does not need to be saved or restored during a context switch between threads of the same process. However, each thread has its own execution context to allow independent execution. This context includes its own Stack pointer, Program counter, and General purpose registers, all of which must be saved and restored during a context switch.
