GATE Mechanical Engineering — paper code ME — is consistently among the highest-volume GATE papers, which makes it one of the most competitive at the top of the score distribution. It opens postgraduate admissions at the IITs, IISc and NITs, and is accepted for recruitment by a number of public sector undertakings.

ME is a physics-dense paper. Its questions lean heavily on derivation, dimensional reasoning and numerical work rather than recall, and the three core sections are large enough that each behaves like a subject in its own right. This page covers what IIT Madras has officially published for GATE 2027 and how to plan around the structure of the paper.

What changed for GATE 2027

GATE 2027 is not a copy-paste of the previous cycle. IIT Madras revised the syllabus after five years to align it with current academic and industry practice, and restructured part of the paper list. Three changes matter when you plan:

1. 1The syllabus was revised. This is the first revision in five years and it applies across papers. Any study plan, book list or PYQ set built for GATE 2022–2026 may now contain topics that have been dropped, and may be missing topics that were added.
2. 2Robotics and Automation (RA) is a new test paper. It joins the paper list as a standalone paper.
3. 3Textile Engineering and Fibre Science moved. It is now a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE) rather than a standalone paper.

GATE 2027 exam dates and registration schedule

IIT Madras released the GATE 2027 Information Brochure v1.0, released 20 July 2026. The examination runs across three consecutive weekends in February 2027, in two sessions each day — forenoon 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and afternoon 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

The paper-wise and session-wise timetable is published separately by the Organizing Institute closer to the examination, so which of the six days your paper falls on is not something anyone can tell you yet. Treat any site claiming a confirmed paper-wise date today as unverified.

GATE 2027 ME exam pattern and marking scheme

Mechanical Engineering (paper code ME) is a three-hour computer-based test carrying 100 marks across 65 questions — 10 General Aptitude questions and 55 subject questions. Questions carry either 1 or 2 marks.

That 13-mark Engineering Mathematics block is the most under-rated scoring opportunity in the paper. It is worth more than most single core subjects, the question style is stable year on year, and it is the one section where careful practice converts almost directly into marks.

Three question types appear, and they do not carry the same risk. Knowing which is which on screen is worth real marks:

GATE Mechanical 2027 syllabus structure

The authoritative document is the official ME syllabus PDF for GATE 2027 published by IIT Madras. Because the syllabus was revised this cycle, treat that PDF as the only definitive scope.

ME has long been organised into four sections plus the common General Aptitude section. Use the structure below to orient yourself, and confirm the topic-level detail against the official 2027 PDF.

• Engineering Mathematics — linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, complex variables, probability and statistics, and numerical methods.
• Applied Mechanics and Design — engineering mechanics, mechanics of materials, theory of machines, vibrations and machine design.
• Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences — fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and applications including power engineering, internal combustion engines, refrigeration and air-conditioning, and turbomachinery.
• Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering — engineering materials; casting, forming and joining; machining and machine tool operations; metrology and inspection; computer integrated manufacturing; production planning and control; inventory control; and operations research.

How to prepare for GATE Mechanical 2027

ME rewards depth of understanding over memorised results more than most papers. A candidate who genuinely understands control volumes, entropy and free-body diagrams can reconstruct a large fraction of the paper from first principles; a candidate relying on formula recall tends to stall the moment a question is phrased unusually.

Study within each section in dependency order

1. 1Engineering Mechanics → Mechanics of Materials → Theory of Machines and Vibrations → Machine Design. Machine design questions assume stress analysis and dynamics are already automatic, so attempting it early is inefficient.
2. 2Thermodynamics → Fluid Mechanics → Heat Transfer → Applications. Thermodynamics is the conceptual base for the entire thermal sciences block; power cycles, IC engines, refrigeration and turbomachinery all become far cheaper once it is genuinely solid.
3. 3Manufacturing, then Industrial Engineering. Manufacturing is process-heavy and comparatively self-contained. Industrial engineering — production planning, inventory, operations research — is the most formulaic part of the paper and among the highest marks-per-hour if you leave enough time for it.
4. 4Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude every day, from the beginning, never end-loaded.

Do not treat Industrial Engineering as optional

Industrial engineering topics — forecasting, inventory models, CPM/PERT, linear programming, queuing — are algorithmic and rule-based. They take comparatively little time to learn well and the questions are among the most predictable in the paper. Candidates who run out of time and drop this block are usually dropping the cheapest marks available to them.

Engineering Mathematics and Aptitude are 28 marks

General Aptitude is worth 15 marks and Engineering Mathematics 13. Together they exceed any single core section of ME, and they are far more stable year to year than the core subjects. Thirty minutes a day on these two, sustained across six months, moves a score more reliably than a final-month push on a hard core topic.

Practise numerical hygiene, because ME is numerical

• Carry units through every step. A dimensionally inconsistent intermediate result is a free error check — use it.
• Watch temperature units specifically. Kelvin-versus-Celsius slips in thermodynamics and heat transfer are one of the most common avoidable losses in the paper.
• Practise NAT questions on a virtual keypad with rounding instructions, since that is the real exam interface and the physical keyboard is disabled.
• Attempt every MSQ and NAT question — neither carries negative marking, so a blank can only cost you.

Audit mocks by subtopic

After each full-length mock, map every wrong answer to the exact subtopic it came from and revise that, rather than re-reading an entire section. Tracking against the GATE ME syllabus tree keeps the difference between "I am weak at heat transfer" and "I am weak at transient conduction and the lumped capacitance assumption" visible — only the second is actionable.

Eligibility, fees and number of papers

The brochure sets a single academic bar: a candidate currently studying in the third or higher year of any undergraduate degree programme, or who has already completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities, is eligible. There is no age limit and no cap on the number of attempts.

• Papers: you may appear in one or two test papers. A second paper must be chosen from the allowed two-paper combinations listed in the brochure — the combinations are not free-form.
• Score validity: a GATE 2027 score stays valid for 3 years from the date the results are announced.
• Mode: computer-based test, in English only, conducted at centres across 300+ cities in India. There are no international centres for GATE 2027.
• Two papers: the fee payable is exactly twice the single-paper fee.

Registration happens only through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS), reachable from the official website. Nothing is submitted on paper — IIT Madras explicitly asks candidates not to post printed application forms or documents.

Practising GATE ME previous year questions

Previous year questions are the only fully reliable signal of how ME is actually examined — how deep a topic goes, which standard results get reused, and how a two-mark question is built out of a one-mark idea. Solving a paper untimed and then reading the solution is revision. Solving it under a three-hour clock, then auditing every wrong answer against the topic it came from, is preparation.

Can I appear for both Mechanical and another GATE paper in 2027?

You may appear in one or two test papers, but a second paper must be selected from the allowed two-paper combinations listed in the official GATE 2027 Information Brochure. The fee for two papers is twice the single-paper fee. Check the official two-paper combination list before planning on this.
