Question
An bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is operating in the active region. If the reverse bias across the base-collector junction is increased, then
Correct answer
(C) the effective base width decreases and common-emitter current gain increases
Solution
When the reverse bias across the base-collector junction of an BJT is increased, the depletion region at the collector-base junction widens. This depletion region extends into the base region, thereby reducing the effective base width (). This phenomenon is known as the Early effect or base-width modulation. A decrease in the effective base width leads to:
1.Less recombination of minority carriers in the base.
2.An increase in the concentration gradient of minority carriers across the base, which increases the collector current .
Since the base current (primarily due to recombination) decreases and increases, the common-emitter current gain increases.Continue learning with Success Tracker
