Question
If the base width in a bipolar junction transistor is doubled, which one of the following statements will be TRUE?
Correct answer
(D) Early Voltage will increase.
Solution
The Early voltage is given by , where is the total charge in the neutral base and is the collector-base junction capacitance. Since is directly proportional to the base width , doubling the base width will increase the Early voltage. Other effects of increasing :
- Current gain decreases because base recombination increases ( or ).
- Unity gain frequency decreases because base transit time increases ().
- Emitter-base junction capacitance is primarily determined by junction area and doping, not the neutral base width.
