Question
Match all the possible combinations between Column X (Cement compounds) and Column Y (Cement properties):
Which one of the following combinations is correct?
| Column X | Column Y |
|---|---|
| (i) | (P) Early age strength |
| (ii) | (Q) Later age strength |
| (iii) | (R) Flash setting |
| (S) Highest heat of hydration | |
| (T) Lowest heat of hydration |
Correct answer
(A) (i) - (P), (ii) - (Q) and (T), (iii) - (R) and (S)
Solution
The properties of Bogue's compounds in cement are as follows:
1.Tricalcium Silicate (): It hydrates rapidly and is responsible for the early strength (P) of cement (usually within the first 7 days).
2.Dicalcium Silicate (): It hydrates slowly and contributes to the later age strength (Q). It also has the lowest heat of hydration (T) among the four major compounds.
3.Tricalcium Aluminate (): It reacts instantly with water and is responsible for flash setting (R) if gypsum is not added. It also generates the highest heat of hydration (S) during the initial stages.
Matching these:- (i) matches with (P)
- (ii) matches with (Q) and (T)
- (iii) matches with (R) and (S)
